The Austrian Association of Wom*n Artists (VBKÖ) is a 112-year-old association for wom*n artists, whose legacy and inheritance—simultaneously complicated, heart-breaking and inspirational. As a queer-feminist organization in 2022, the VBKÖ pushes the question of what it means to be a feminist, a wom*n and an artist today. The VBKÖ brings together a program that reflects the association’s contemporary concerns, asking: How does one look to the future whilst reflecting on the heaviness of the past and the potential of the present? How does one continue to work collaboratively, actively and fiercely against the constant systemic discrimination of wom*n?

With the VBKÖ Archive as a starting point for critically questioning the heritage of the 112-year history of VBKÖ and making it accessible for artistic and scientific research, the project aims at processing and activating the archive of the VBKÖ. The central concern is to keep the archive alive within the association and to establish a self-determined archival practice that enables an active approach to one’s own history.

The members of VBKÖ activate stories held in their archive in a durational performance throughout the Collaborations exhibition space: stories of perseverance, of voluntary work, of communal efforts to keep alive a feminist spirit that has faltered and wavered throughout the years. The performance is accompanied by the screening of Hauntings in the Archive by the Sekretariat für Geister, Archivpolitiken und Lücken (SKGAL).

Panel Discussion: The Importance of Anti-Racist Ethics in Organizations

The critical emergence of anti-racist ethics in organizations allows us, who are working and living in diverse communities, to truly care and be responsible for each other. How does one fight to end hegemonic structures and discrimination? It begins in our circles.
