Failure to function is a diagnosis describing a person who fails to cope with social norms or has a maladaptive behavior. What is considered a failure can nevertheless become a productive moment. When somebody breaks with social expectations, it produces a glitch in the system through which the system and its underlying mechanisms become visible. The inability to fit into the designs that regulate our everyday lives might ultimately transform the terms by pointing to how the prescribed modes of being fail to encompass the needs and desires of all bodies.
The artworks brought together in the exhibition Failure to Function revolve around the figures of the dysfunctional, the maladjusted and the deviating. Failing to function – deliberately or not – can turn into a disruptive force that calls our habitual ways of being, perceiving and acting into question.
