Guadalupe Aldrete
Andrea Vezga

In the exhibition Transfigurations the artists Guadalupe Aldrete and Andrea Vezga tell the story of many Latin American migrants in Vienna who, like themselves, go through an odyssey of failures and rises in order to stay in Europe and be treated equally. These experiences congregate into what can be seen as an anti-monument, which evokes the deserts, offices and institutions where they experienced and overcame failures. Thereby, a symbolic dialogue is carried out between the traces of the experiences that have become materials and those in the video performance.

The video performance and the anti-monument provide insights into the internal pilgrimages of migrants and their constant discovery of their own fragility and resilience. They are testimonies and reminders that they all, in one way or another, are a product of migration.

In this project, performing and visual arts cross their paths by allowing the audience to walk through the stage and to have a close look at the materials as well as the traces of their use. This interdisciplinarity, which is characteristic of Aldrete-Vezga collaborations, confers equal value to all parts of the work: the sculpture, the video, the performance and its traces.
