El Beat del Bullerengue

El Beat del Bullerengue: Percussion Workshop & Rueda with Daniela Serna / @akupercu

Sat, July 5th, 11:00–13:00

An Afro-Colombian percussion workshop para todxs! In the session, we will explore 2 rhythms, bullerengue sentao and chalupa, by learning how to play them on Tambor Alegre, Tambora, Llamador, and Maracas. These styles, also known in the territories as “aires,” are part of the oral tradition of bailes Cantaos from the Urabá antioqueño region. For example, you can visit Puerto Escondido, Maria La Baja, and Necoclí to experience the 3 most important National Bullerengue Festivals, where people celebrate this heritage by singing and dancing in a circle better known as la Rueda, essentially a circle where the community gathers to connect, express, and heal. At the end of the workshop, we will have our Rueda, where you will not only play percussion but also sing, clap, and dance as all of these elements are interconnected and part of the same cultural manifestation.

  • No previous experience is needed.
  • Not mandatory to have a drum, but if you have access to any kind of hand percussion (conga, bongo, djembe, etc) or shaker, please make sure to bring them.
